Last
year, I flew alone from Bangkok to SiemRiep to visit the incredible Khmer
temple complexes at Angkor. Upon arrival, I quickly befriended the other
western tourist, Susan. We hired a guide, guard and driver, and spent five
sweltering days exploring numerous temple ruins buried in a vast area of
mine-infested jungle.
Angkor was the capital of the Khmer empire from the 9th to 15th Century CE during Cambodia's Classical Period. Khmer power reached its peak in the 12th century during the reigns of King Suryavarman II and King Jayavarman VII and the construction of the Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom temple complexes.
